In somewhat of a(n) historic moment, Square-Enix announced that the Nintendo Switch wouldn’t be the only platform to get the classic Final Fantasy games next year, and that they’d in fact be coming to Xbox One as well (and Steam, but PC has had these games for years).
While this is no doubt just a blip on a normal gamer’s radar, it represents a big moment for Xbox gamers such as myself. Some of these games, at one point or another, were long thought to be out of reach unless you owned a Playstation console and didn’t mind re-purchasing games you might already own.
While I do still own all of my original PS copies of Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, and the PS2 copy of FFX, I’ve always grumbled at the thought of not being able to pop them into my PS4 and give them a go. Hooking up a PS2 to a 4k tv and playing the originals is just… no.
This news ignites an interest in re-acquiring these games, but now it’s just a matter of which platform I’ll get it for. Playing a game with backgrounds pre-rendered at 320×240 (ish) on a 4k tv doesn’t exactly get me giddy, but they would be great mobile games on the Switch. Not to mention they’d probably look better on the smaller screen.
On the other hand, the FFX combo and FFXII should look great on the X. I’ve honestly been waiting for an excuse to get FFXII on the PS4 (i.e. waiting for a sub-$20 price drop) but at this point I might just wait.
It’s weird to be excited for games that came out decades ago and have been readily available ever since, but so far I’ve passed on the titles, with the exception of FFX/X-2 which I have on PS4.
Now I’m just hoping these don’t release with ridiculous prices. I’ll pay $20 in a heartbeat for FFXII and FFX, but any more than that and I might just be waiting a bit longer.
